ANaBoRaRe is the owner of all of the semen of the Reggiana breed. To achieve this goal, the Gene Bank bought all the semen of Reggiana that was produced in the past by the artificial insemination centres. This bank constitutes the genetic reserves and the semen production by the new bulls that are approved annually by the National Association. The bulls selected to produce semen were been sent to (COFA) Cremona Artificial Fertilization Cooperative.
With the approval of the project Dual Breeding - Dual-purpose cattle breeds: an alternative model of eco-sustainable animal husbandry” the males considered suitable are sent to the genetic centre of Fiume Veneto and then to the Centro Tori di Moruzzo in the province of Udine for semen collection.
The semen can be used in compliance with the project forecasts and the decisions made by the Central Technical Commission of the Genealogy Book by ANaBoRaRe. This method is considered a fundamental element for the maintenance of genetic variability and the improvement of the breed. The gene bank currently has the semen of 150 bulls.
Thanks to the Dual Breeding project, by 2019 the breed's genetic bank will be enriched with about 50% of the DNA of the animals that are bred, allowing us to accumulate a wealth of genetic knowledge from which to obtain valuable information when setting up mating plans in the context of new selection programs.
